The national treasury (aka the regional fund in Citystate I) will be used to purchase new lands to build new cities or to bail out the cities in need. The legislation, the currency’s value, civil rights and the freedom index will be shared across the Nation and each city will freely contribute to the national treasury. More precisely, new cities will start up with a stronger demand so they can grow faster initially (this is very similar to the Simcity 4 region system). This makes possible the creation of nations at a more realistic scale, but more specifically it allows us to expand in a continuous fashion without having to start from scratch at every new city.Įvery additional city will benefit from the economic attractiveness of its neighboring cities. Unlike in Citystate I in which the region mode consists of independent city-states, the region here is becoming the State itself.

Fortunately, after a month – essentially through trial and error – all buildings, roads and the data they hold can be saved and recovered. Being a self-taught programmer, this process surely revealed some of the bad coding practices I’ve gathered along the way. Saving stuff in an object-oriented programming environment ended up being more cumbersome that I thought as it required major changes to the global data structure of the game. Initially I thought that the saving system would be quite easy to handle and that I’d spend more time on the national interface. Until now I’ve been constantly postponing the saving system, the national interface forced me to finally get down to it. Each group is defined by a specific income distribution and its own political leaning (clicking over the maps reveals the respective attributes). Westerners for instance are looking for a State with a high civil rights index while Africans will be more likely to emigrate if the unemployment rate is low enough. The willingness of a population to emigrate depends on its geographical origin, each group being attracted by a set of specific indicators. Eventually, the best you are at managing the city and its economy the more people you can let in. Allowing the right amount of population to come in is crucial to avoid triggering poverty, unemployment and riots. As our citizens will unlikely have 10 children (at least in the beginning), most of the city’s population growth will rely on immigration. Immigration polices are fundamental to the city’s development. These were the last ‘big’ features to be implemented and now a new development phase has begun.īut first, here’s a few screenshots to recap the latest additions, including: shanty towns, buses, trains, bridges, airports, new construction animations, hospitals, fire and police stations.Ī few words about the immigration mechanics. In the last couple of months, I’ve been working on the more code-oriented part of the game, mainly the saving/loading systems and the region mode.
